Alice in Wonderland Charms Huntington Intermediate School

The Huntington Intermediate School auditorium came alive with two days of singing, dancing and acting as the school’s drama club treated patrons to its version of the Walt Disney classic, “Alice in Wonderland.”

The show was directed by art teacher Karen Morea, who was assisted by music teacher Susan Hahn. The pair was understandably nervous throughout the performances, but wore wide smiles afterwards as the cast, chorus and stagehands basked in the afterglow of repeated ovations from the packed houses.

More than 100 students participated in the staging of the show, including 28 in the cast, 44 in the chorus and another 63 on the stage crew. Teacher aide Liz Lupi served as stage crew manager and Ken Gilbert was the stage manager, a role he has perfected during twice-a-year high school productions. Huntington High School students Caitlin Etri, Zachary Grill, Rebecca Silverman and Catherine Tacopina assisted the faculty directors and worked with students.

Huntington Intermediate School librarian Patricia Dillon called the production “as the cast and crew danced and sang to enthusiastic crowds at all performances.” Parents were delighted with the overall quality of the show and showered praise on all those involved in its staging.

Three different Alice characters contributed to the story as the “small,” “tall” and “everyday” Alice. The show also featured traditional characters such as the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, the Queen, Tweedledee and Tweedledum and others.

The audience was charmed and entranced as the chorus sang from risers erected in front of the stage and danced down the aisles, entertaining family members with catchy tunes. The production was enhanced with stunning and vivid sets, creating a joyful mood in the auditorium.

“This was one of the best performances that I have ever seen,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said. “The students, their parents and everyone associated with the show should be very proud of their work.”
