Blue Devil Lax Shooting for a Cure
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team will take on state powerhouse Cold Spring Harbor in the 2nd Annual Shooting for a Cure game at Blue Devil Stadium on Saturday, March 29 at 2 p.m. The game will be recorded by Madison Square Garden (MSG) network and shown at a later date.
The event will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The Blue Devils enter the season as the defending Suffolk champions. Cold Spring Harbor is also coming off a splendid year, which saw the Seahawks win the Nassau crown last spring. Both programs are perennially strong, with each routinely appearing in state and national rankings.
At last year’s inaugural game, a standing room only crowd of 1,700 saw the Blue Devils defeat national power John Jay-Cross River, 9-6 behind Shamel Bratton’s three goals. A large crowd is expected again this year as Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor fans turnout for what many expect will be a classic battle.
Huntington head coach Paul McDermott founded the event to raise awareness of diabetes, its causes and treatments and to generate funds to find a cure. Preceding the varsity game will be a JV contest between the two teams at 11 a.m.
Huntington coasted to Suffolk and Long Island titles last year with one of the greatest groups of players ever assembled. But, the season ended in ultimate frustration as the Blue Devils were upended by John Jay in the state semifinals, 11-10. The loss ended a 63 game winning streak.
McDermott said contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation are welcome. Checks payable to JDRF can be sent to McDermott at 29 Tennyson Place, Greenlawn, NY 11740.
