Perfection for Finley Boys’ Swimming

Christian Yeager was virtually unstoppable and so were his teammates as the J. Taylor Finley Middle School boys’ swimming team finished the season with a perfect 6-0 record under coach Lynn Perzeszty.

Yeager went undefeated in all of his events and effectively owned the pool. Perzeszty said the talented eighth grader, “had the parents, coaches and fellow swimmers looking on in awe” at every meet. The best times for the young dynamo included a 32.3 second effort in the 50 breastroke, 1:02.3 in the 100 individual medley and a blistering 1:59.6 in the 200 freestyle.

Connor McCarthy, a seventh grader also enjoyed a standout season during which he gained a growing reputation as an exceptional all-around swimmer with a particular gift for the butterfly.

The Falcons had a very special season, highlight by the program’s first-ever win over Syosset in the opening meet of the year. Perzeszty called it “a measure of how the season would go,” and so it was.

In addition to Yeager and McCarthy, seventh grader Tom Scott was one of the key cogs in Finley’s well-oiled undefeated machine. Matt Keys was another essential ingredient and Perzeszty called the eighth grader the team’s most improved swimmer.

The 19-swimmer squad was “a good group of kids that really worked hard together and individually,” the coach said.

The Falcons look to field a strong team again next winter and with 10 swimmers returning “they should be just as impressive,” Perzeszty said.
