An Energetic Team Struggles

A roster filled with energetic players was not enough for the J. Taylor Finley Middle School 8th grade girls’ volleyball team, which compiled a 2-9 record this winter under coach Caroline Reilly.

The 18-player Falcon team was captained by Natalie Acton, Danielle Cochrane, Jillian Kocis and Colleen Wright. Each of the players is eligible to compete on the Huntington High School team next year as freshmen, which would be a tremendous boost to that program as it seeks to grow stronger and solidify its foundation.

Reilly said the highlight of the season came in a win over North Babylon’s Robert Moses Middle School, when Finley came from behind in two games. Hartmann came through with the game-winning serve.

Despite losing 9-of-11 meets, Finley did have some talented players, including Bianca Iarrobino, who compiled the longest serving streak of the season with 11. The coach said hitters/defenders Dania Merilan and Laurelle Byrne-Cody were a “dynamic duo in the backcourt with may saves defensively.” Danielle Cochrane developed into a legitimate offensive threat and Colleen Wright showed a knack for “outstanding passes” from the serve-receive position.

Jaclyn Herrington and Natalie Acton also shined, with fine all-around playing and setting. The team needs more time playing together and additional opportunities to develop individual and groups skills. Players will get just that on the high school level.

“The team was very energetic and has tremendous potential,” Reilly said. “They will be a threat in the future.”
