Huntington Students Meet the Instruments
Third graders in the Huntington School District came face-to-face with a variety of musical instruments, including some that were completely unknown to the youngsters. “Meet the Instruments” is an annual district program, which introduces primary level students to musical equipment they can study and play as fourth graders.
Music teachers were on hand in each primary building to meet with classes, demonstrate and discuss instruments and explain the instructional and performance program that awaits the third graders next year and beyond. The youngsters were fascinated by the presentations and excited about learning to play an instrument and being able to explore the world of music.
Band teachers set up shop in each school across the district so that every student could learn about each of the beginning instruments. The visits occur annually in February, when the Woodhull and Huntington Intermediate school music teachers take their "Meet the Instruments" show on the road.
Each year after parents are introduced to the available instruments and the band program at a special meeting, students complete their instrument applications and make three choices of instruments.
“The success of our instrumental program depends on having well balanced ensembles, so, not everyone can play their first choice,” explained Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts. “The groups wouldn't sound very good if there were only saxophones and drums, or all violins. Our experience is that most students are quite happy with playing any of their choice instruments.”
Third graders are encouraged to sign up for the Summer Arts enrichment program, where they can begin the study of their instrument and take a wide variety of music, art and dance programs. Students who enroll in the summer program play five times a week, and make “remarkable progress on their instruments,” Mrs. Fretz said. The brochure for the Summer Arts Program will be available by mid-March and posted on the district’s website at www.hufsd.edu.
