Huntington Website Debuts New Video Feature
The Huntington School District website (www.hufsd.edu) has a new feature. A video gallery recently made its debut, offering videos created by high school students enrolled in three levels of courses in the school’s state-of-the-art video lab. To view the gallery, log onto the website, click on the tab labeled The Arts and scroll down the left side and click on the “Videos” link.
The courses, taught by Heather Swan, allow students to work with the techniques and computer software that represents the current industry standard. “The quality and creativity of the student videos is just amazing,” said Joan R. Fretz, director of fine and performing arts.
In Creative Video I, students create music videos, surrealist dream projects, commercials and documentaries. Creative Video II experiments with 2D animation in “30-second movie parodies” and “rotoscoping” which involves 2D drawings over the top of live action video. Video II students create public service announcements, art movement projects (bringing famous paintings to life) and develop short stories in the style of a favorite director.
In Advanced Video Production, third year program students create interactive DVD portfolios and stories in which 2D animated characters interact with live action characters. They learn to use multi-cam editing (utilized in sporting events), create short stories using motion special effects, work with 8mm cameras and digitize and edit black and white films, study the art of silent films and create and film their own silent stories.
“Few high schools provide the professional film making experience that Ms. Swan is providing in her program,” Ms. Fretz said. “They are learning techniques and gaining skills that rival many college programs. I hope the Huntington community will tune in often to the district website to enjoy the latest features created by tomorrow’s film directors.”
Videos are being added to the new website gallery one at a time. Huntington video students have won numerous awards in recent years and the website feature is meant to showcase the best work.
