The Huntington girls’ basketball team lost a tough game to Harborfields, 51-43. The Blue Devils were thrown on the defensive early and never quite managed to gain the advance the rest of the way.
The two state ranked powers battled it out in front of a packed house at Harborfields. Huntington trailed 18-9 after one quarter and found itself down at halftime, 23-18. Kerry Hicks led the Blue Devils with 16 points and Julie Forster and Maria Marascia each had 12 points, respectively. Only four Huntington players scored in the game.
The Blue Devils entered the game ranked 13th in the latest poll conducted by the New York State Sportswriters’ Association (www.newyorksportswriters.org). Harborfields was in the No. 15 spot in the state poll.
During one stretch, the Blue Devils did manage to go on a nice second half run to narrow the team’s deficit from 15 to just one point with 1:42 remaining, but never managed to turn the corner, falling victim to a pair of forced shots. Marascia sunk a pair of three-pointers and Hicks hit one from downtown. The game evened the two teams’ records at 9-1 in league play.
Alex Brown went 5-for-6 from the foul line with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to help the Huntington boys’ basketball team top Islip in a key League V game, 45-39. The victory puts the Blue Devils in the driver’s seat as the team attempts to secure a post-season berth.
The game was a defensive struggle, with the teams trading the lead numerous times. Islip led 9-8 after the first eight minutes, but Huntington was ahead 17-15 at halftime. By the beginning of the fourth quarter the Buccaneers had regained the advantage, 29-28.
The final frame witnessed not only Alex Brown’s heroics, but also saw Ted Calligeros score seven of his dozen points in the game and Huntington outscored Islip, 17-10.
Matt Duffy and Alex Brown scored eight points each, respectively. Peter Delfino added six points and Pat Coffey dumped in another four.
The Huntington girls’ winter track team sparkled during a recent meet. Impressive performances were turned in by Chelsea Hines and Elizabeth Polacek in the shot put. Jenny Hannan and Maya Yakobi were strong in running the opening legs of both the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays.
The sprint relay team of Michaela Acton, Olivia Hayes-Hurley, Leslie O’Brien and Kathryn Schmitz finished second, but they shattered the previous school record in the event by a full four seconds. Head coach Debra Cheskes called it a “great night.”
