Three in Double Figures as Blue Devils Coast
The Huntington girls’ basketball team bounced back from its first loss in league play to run past Islip, 67-36. The victory, which was the 10th for the Blue Devils in 11 League V games this winter, set the stage for the final push toward the playoffs.
Huntington’s high octane offense hummed like a finely tuned race car, as Julie Forster (15 points), Kerry Hicks (13) and Maria Marascia (12) each reached double figures. In all, nine Blue Devils scored as the team raced to an early 22-6 lead and built a 39-20 advantage by halftime.
When Huntington is running, it’s hard for any team to keep up. The Blue Devils notched seven three-pointers, including three by Hicks and two each by Marascia and Caitlin Ortiz. Forster, who finished with 14 rebounds, played her typically understated game, ditching flash for efficiency. The junior was devastating under the boards and aggressive in the lane.
Matte Scully enjoyed one of her best games of the season, too, scoring seven points and exhibiting an extremely physical style of play that saw her fighting for loose balls. Senior Casey Scully turned in one of her classic gritty efforts, scoring eight points, picking up five steals and playing airtight defense.
Huntington’s players appear to be in much better condition than they were just two weeks ago. A high level of fitness is essential to the running game the Blue Devils employ as they try to run the other team off the court and into mistakes.
Blue Devil Notes: Ortiz scored six points off the bench and Lauren Visbal, Liz Northcote and Lisa Marino had two points each, respectively . . . Marascia could only be frustrated when four of her shots spun around the rim before bouncing out, preventing her from reaching 20 points . . . A small crowd of about 125 fans turned out on a cold night in Huntington . . . Pending any late season upsets, the Blue Devils are in line to host an early round playoff game in mid-February . . . Forster had an amazing 13 points and 10 rebounds in an especially productive first half.
