Blue Devils Upset the Harborfields Tornadoes, 50-42
A night of inspired play breathed new life into the Huntington boys’ basketball team’s drive toward a playoff berth as the Blue Devils topped Harborfields, 50-42.
Huntington entered the game with a 4-5 mark in league play and was badly in need of a win to keep its post-season hopes alive. It got it as the Blue Devils utilized a fast-paced offense, swarming defense and strong inside play to beat the Tornadoes, who have been ranked among Long Island’s best this winter.
Huntington opened the game by attacking the basket, methodically building a 13-8 lead after eight minutes of play. The Blue Devils eventually extended their margin to nine points before Harborfields sunk a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the teams into their respective locker rooms at halftime with Huntington holding a 29-23 advantage.
The second half saw Harborfields slowly claw its way back into the game. Huntington’s shooters suffered a dry spell from the floor and too many Blue Devil turnovers, allowed the Tornadoes to come all the way back and tie the score late in the game, 42-42 as a loud crowd of 450 rocked Louis D. Gymnasium.
But, with so much riding on the outcome, Huntington just wouldn’t be denied, going on an 8-0 run, capped off by Matt Duffy’s three-point basket and pair of free throws with less than a minute remaining, which secured the upset.
Anthony Brown scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds and Alex Brown pumped in another 11 points. If the Blue Devils can keep up the same intensity over the rest of the regular season, a playoff berth seems assured.
