Woodhull School Improvements Identified
Woodhull Intermediate School has served the needs of the Huntington School District community for more than four decades. Keeping the building in good shape remains a priority and officials have identified several possible capital projects to address specific areas of concern.
Some of the planned work at Woodhull has already been designed, including the replacement of the public address and security systems as well as the exterior doors and ceilings. These projects have initially been estimated to cost $618,000 although the actual cost after competitive bidding could be much lower.
District officials have also identified other potential projects at Woodhull for future years. These include replacement of the building’s original fuel oil tank, replacement of the fire alarm system and asbestos floor tiles, replacement of aging roof fans and roadway, parking lot and sidewalk reconstruction.
The district has a longstanding practice of avoiding expensive bond issues and has instead preferred to use existing revenues to fund renovation and reconstruction projects. The district has also made use of more than $1.3 million in state EXCEL monies to address various capital needs.
By largely adhering to a “pay-as-you-go” philosophy, the district has avoiding taking on a huge debt and being burdened with large annual interest payments.
