Huntington Performance Strong on Foreign Language Regents

Huntington High School students mastered last June’s foreign language Regents exams in Spanish, French and Italian, with many earning top grades.  The results were welcomed by the district as school officials continue their study of student performance across academic disciplines.

Every student that took the Regents French and Italian exams passed and 95% passed the Spanish exam.  “We are very pleased with how students performed on these tests,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.  “These tests require a great deal of hard work and study.  We are very proud of the students who excelled on these exams and congratulate their teachers, as well.”

A total of 76 students took the Spanish Regents and 47 of them earned a grade of 85 or higher.  Of the 18 students who sat for the French Regents, 16 scored at least an 85.  On the Italian Regents, 34-of-43 students that took the test notched an 85 or higher.

At J. Taylor Finley Middle School, more than 200 students took Second Language Proficiency state exams in Spanish, French and Italian.  Based on their scores, students are able to gain one high school credit in foreign language.

On the Spanish SLP exam, 94 percent of the 171 Finley students that took the test passed it with 116 of them earning an 85 or higher.  On the French SLP, 94 percent of the students taking the test passed and 13-of-16 achieved an 85 or better.  Similar results were seen on the Italian SLP as 93 percent of the 43 students taking the exam passed, with 23 of them notching at least an 85.
