Huntington Looks for Improvement on State ELA Exam

Huntington School District officials are studying the three year trend of elementary and middle school scores on the New York State English Language Arts exam.  The district is hoping to improve results across the board this year.

An examination of three years of scores reveals both improvement and continued challenges  “Parents can be assured that we are completely focused on delivering a high quality education to every student and committed to improving our test scores on every grade level,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.

A large majority of students met state proficiency levels at all grade levels in 2008.  Some scores seesawed from year-to-year, others showed large swings and some trended in a narrow range.

At J. Taylor Finley Middle School, 57.69 percent of eighth graders and 74 percent of seventh graders met the state ELA proficiency level. At Woodhull Intermediate School, 71 percent of fourth graders, 78.8 percent of fifth graders and 74 percent of sixth graders reached the proficiency level.  At Huntington Intermediate School (now Jack Abrams School), 76 percent of fourth graders, 76 percent of fifth graders and 79 percent of sixth graders were at or above proficiency on the ELA exam.

The district also announced ELA proficiency results for its four primary schools, including Flower Hill (81 percent), Jefferson (68 percent), Southdown (79.6 percent) and Washington (75 percent).  To some extent, year-to-year scores at individual schools were influenced by changes in attendance zones.

“We are going to work hard to improve our ELA scores this year,” Mr. Finello said.
