Retired Huntington Teacher Turns 100 Years Old
The Century Club has a new member in retired Huntington teacher Ethel C. Cashman. The former Huntington High School English teacher and department chairman turned 100 years old earlier this year.
“Being born in 1908 means she is one of our century old celebs,” said Jack Abrams, a retired Huntington principal and curator of the district’s School Heritage Museum. Mr. Abrams regularly keeps in contact with fellow retirees and he recently made a belated birthday call to Miss Cashman.
After decades as a teacher, Ms. Cashman was given additional duties as the English department chairperson for about eight years leading up to her retirement in 1967. Today she is a resident of an assisted living home in the upstate New York town of Malone, not far from the border between the U.S. and Canada.
“She speaks well and informed me that she participates in most of the activities provided,” Mr. Abrams said about the former Huntington faculty member. “She had just finished viewing a delightful black and white film. About six of her former students keep in touch.”
Ms. Cashman, who earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Albany State Teachers College, sent a “big hi” to all those teachers she worked with in Huntington, Mr. Abrams said.
