District Studies Regents Exam Scores
School is out for summer but officials in the Huntington School District are studying English and social studies Regents exam results with the ultimate goal of improving student performance.
The June English Regents saw 82 percent or 75 of the 91 Huntington students tested post a grade of at least a 65. In all, 67 students achieved a minimum of 85 on the test. When the state variance is factored in, 87 percent of students earned a 55 or higher.
“This was the first year we had the 10th grade honors English students take the Comprehensive Regents in June, a full semester before their peers in January of 11th grade,” said Joseph Leavy, department director. Mr. Leavy said that English teacher Aimee Antorino's students “performed remarkably well with over 95 percent scoring on the mastery level, which is defined as a grade of 85 or better on the challenging two day exam.”
Juniors typically take the English Regents for the first time in January. This provides them with plenty of opportunities to retake the exam if necessary before they are scheduled to graduate.
The Global History Regents resulted in 72 percent of 285 test-takers passing the exam. In all, 105 of these students earned a grade of at least 85. When the state variance is factored in, 84 percent of students notched a score of 55 or higher.
On the U.S. History Regents Huntington students turned in strong results. Of the 254 students tested, 93 percent passed, including 180 who had an 85 or higher. A total of 96 percent of test-takers scored a 55 or higher.
“Our results for Global and U.S. Regents mirrored the previous year’s scores,” Mr. Leavy said. “The staff continues to analyze the data to determine what areas students showed strength and weakness in,” Mr. Leavy said.
