Huntington School Board Notes


Huntington School Board members authorized the placement of Bethel AME Church on the list of organizations approved to use the district’s facilities.  “The intended purpose for using the facility is to have a community outreach forum for the entire community,” wrote Loretta Williams-Wilson, Bethel AME Church outreach coordinator, in a letter to the district. 

 

The group will be using the Jack Abrams Intermediate School auditorium on Sept. 27 from 5-11 p.m.  Approximately 450 persons are expected to attend.  Proceeds from the event will be used to support events for youth and women sponsored by Bethel AME Church.



Trustees approved the appointment of eight long-term substitute teachers, including Joyce Breisacher (special education, Huntington High School, Sept. 1 through Dec. 19), Carolyn Naldi (classroom, Jack Abrams Intermediate School, Sept. 1 through June 30, 2009), Jacqueline Leonard (speech therapist, district-wide, Sept. 1 through June 30, 2009), Heather Barfuss (classroom, Jack Abrams School, Sept. 1 through June 30, 2009), Catherine Cooper (classroom, Flower Hill Primary School, Sept. 1 through Dec. 19), Beth Minoff (classroom, Jefferson Primary School, Sept. 1 through approximately Nov. 14), Kathleen Francom (music, Jefferson School, Sept. 1 through June 30, 2009) and Jill Lowe (ESL, Flower Hill School/Woodhull Intermediate School, Sept. 1 through June 30, 3009.)



Extra duty assignments at J. Taylor Finley Middle School have been approved for Mark Belton (art club and stage crew), Dee Weinstock (AV), Angela Long (community club), Debra Kim (drama club), Tim Madden (leaders club), Travis Smith (leaders club), Mary Paar (leaders club), Elizabeth Grote (Mathletes-7), Denis Grodzicki (Mathletes-8), Kimberly Schiller (school newspaper), Sharon Holly (school store), Kimberly Finneran (student government), Frank Battista (student government), John Hlavaty (yearbook) and Brian Stellato (music theory I).



Trustees authorized the disposal of two clothes dryers, a pair of Cartline carts, a metal cart, a freezer and two tray holders.



A bid award was made to Huntington Plumbing Supply in the amount of $8,007.96 for plumbing supplies.  Carrier Northeast won a bid in the amount of $48,300 for HVAC equipment.  Bar-Boy Products, Inc. was the low bidder for commercial dishwashing equipment and trustees made an award in the amount of $27,381.15.



Trustees approved district membership in SCOPE Education Services.  According to its website, SCOPE “is a not-for-profit, private organization permanently chartered by the New York State Board of Regents to provide services to school districts.  Founded in 1964 by school superintendents, it is a cooperative venture for sharing resources to deal with common concerns.”

 

The district will pay a membership fee of $4,800 for the year.  Membership benefits include various publications, discounted tuition for School Board members, administrators and teachers at SCOPE conferences, seminars, workshops and special events, discounted fees for customized staff development program and School Board seminars, access to user-fee programs such as teacher and administrative placement, child care, management and demographic studies, longitudinal financial analysis, security-safe school assessments, fingerprinting of new employees, outdoor learning programs, child abuse prevention courses, continuing and adult education programs, paraprofessional training and assorted other programs and services.



Several budget transfers from one account code to another were approved to cover costs associated with fifth grade science, math and social studies workbooks at Jack Abrams Intermediate School ($4,400), summer literacy program supplies ($800) and summer school related postage ($41.58).



Trustees awarded bids for physical education supplies to Passons Sports/Sport Supply ($3,302.63), Sportime ($3,815.98) and NASCO ($3,773.92).



The next regular meeting of the Huntington School Board is scheduled for Monday, August 25 at 7 p.m. in the Jack Abrams Intermediate School auditorium.
