Blue Devil Sports Briefs


Huntington High School’s 40th Annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet will be held Thursday, May 29 at 6 p.m. in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.  To secure a ticket call the athletic office at 673-2018.

 


The Huntington junior varsity softball team turned back Amityville, 14-0.  The Blue Devils were led by eighth grade pitcher Jackie Herrington, who fanned seven batters. 

 


The Huntington girls’ track and field team defeated Harborfields, 88-53 to improve to 7-0.  The Blue Devils swept all three relay races.

 


Anthony Fasciano hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Huntington baseball team over Eastport-South Manor, 10-9.  Blue Devil power-hitter Joe Rielly, who went 3-for-4, earlier smacked a grand slam in the game.  Mike Taylor also picked up three hits. 

 

Fasciano was also the winning pitcher, after coming on in relief of Dan Goldstein, who allowed no earned runs over five innings, while yielding just a pair of hits and fanning eight. 

 


Rocky Point defeated the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team, 17-4.  The Eagles jumped out to an 8-1 first quarter lead and were ahead 14-2 at halftime.  Steve Mock scored twice for the Blue Devils, who also received goals from Kevin Bilzi and Patrick Wright.  Goalie Mark Salerno stopped 12 shots.

 


John McCallen and Steve Mock each scored for the Huntington boys’ lacrosse team, but the Blue Devils lost to Comsewogue, 15-2.  Goalie Mark Salerno record 18 saves.  The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead and were ahead 7-1 at halftime.

 


Senior Katherine Thompson scored four goals to lead the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team past Islip, 8-7.  Allison Thompson, Angela Bosco, Casey Scully and Faith Maybeck also scored for the Blue Devils.  Matte Scully added four crucial assists.  Casey Scully scored the game winner with about four minutes left on the clock, successfully converting a pass from her sister.  Karly Kocis made 14 saves in goal.

 


Shoreham-Wading River toppled the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team, 18-5, after building an insurmountable 14-2 first half lead.  Matte Scully score three goals for the Blue Devils and her sister Casey scored twice.  Sarah Paar picked up an assist.  Karly Kocis stopped 11 shots in goal.

The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team edged Kings Park, 14-10.  Angela Bosco had her best afternoon of the season, scoring five goals for the Blue Devils and adding a pair of assists.  Casey Scully contributed four goals and four assists.  Matte Scully scored three times and Alexandra Kimchy and Emma Hayes-Hurley chipped in one goal each, respectively.  Karly Kocis record a dozen saves in goal.

 


The Huntington boys’ track and field team enjoyed a strong showing in the Middle Country Relays at Newfield High School.  The Blue Devils finished fifth in a field of more than 25 Long Island teams. 

 

Eddie Santos, Fritz Barreau and Chris Sandoval finished first in discus with a combined length of 384 feet and fourth in the shot put with a joint measurement of 125'.  Josh Daves, Emmanuel Dume and Jake Gayle placed first in the long jump in 60'11.  Stevens Merilan, Walter Stephen and Josh Daves placed fourth in the high jump in 16'7.

 

Huntington’s 4 x 100m relay of Josh Daves, Emmanuel Dume, Jake Gayle, Quillian Respass rallied from behind to finish second in 44.0 seconds, trailing only Suffolk winter track champions Middle Country, who finished in 43.4.

 

The Blue Devil 1600m medley relay team of Stevens Merilan, Quillian Respass, Josh Daves, and Brian Cotter placed third in 3:45 behind Amityville, and St. John the Baptist,

 

Huntington followed up the performance by beating previously undefeated Eastport-South Manor, 96.5-24.5 in a dual meet.

 


The Mount Sinai girls’ lacrosse team edged Huntington, 13-10.  Matte Scully scored three goals for the Blue Devils and Allison Thompson and Michaela Brown tallied two goals each, respectively.  Julie Forster, Casey Scully and Molly Burnett also found the cage.  Karly Kocis recorded 14 saves in goal.

 


The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team built a 12-1 halftime lead en route to a 15-4 victory over Southampton.  Patrick Wright scored three goals and notched three assists to lead the Blue Devils.  Steve Mock had two goals and four assists and Patrick Einhorn found the back of the net twice.  Peter Knutson, Kevin Marek, Brian Ruggiero, John McCallen and Kevin Bilzi also scored.  Nick Schoen added two assists.  Derrick Northcote and Mark Salerno combined to make four saves in goal.

 


Rocky Point outscored the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team 10-1 in the second half to coast to an 18-4 victory.  Casey Scully, Angela Bosco, Allison Thompson and Michaela Brown scored for the Blue Devils.  Matte Scully and Sarah Paar combined to stop seven shots in goal.
