Hicks and Forster Earn All-State Honors

Juniors Kerry Hicks and Julie Forster were named to the all-state basketball team after helping lead Huntington High School to its first-ever Suffolk County crown in the sport. The all-state teams were announced last week on the New York State Sportswriters Association website.

Hicks, a 5’7 guard who was also all-state as a sophomore, averaged 14.4 points and five assists this past winter and connected on 37 three-pointers. Forster, a 5’11 forward, averaged 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils and turned in a series of huge performances in a series of games down the stretch, including the county final semifinal against Harborfields and in the Suffolk championship game against John Glenn.

The NYSSWA picked Hicks for Class A second team honors and Forster for the Class A ninth team. The selections effectively place Hicks among the top ten players from all schools in Class A and Forster among the top 45. There are thousands of high school basketball players in New York.

Hicks and Forster were earlier named all-county by the Suffolk Girls’ Basketball Coaches Association and garnered first team all-county recognition from the girls’ basketball website High School Hoops (www.highschoolhoops.org).  Senior 5’9 guard Casey Scully earned second team all-county honors from the website.  The website also picked Forster as a first-team all-Long Island player.  Hicks was selected second-team all-Long Island.  Hicks, Forster, Scully and 5’7 junior guard Maria Marascia were also tapped for all-league honors by the coaches association.

In Scully’s case, there was some disappointment among Blue Devil faithful that it wasn’t possible for her to be named to the all-state team. “That kid was the heart and soul of the team,” Huntington coach Brad Reminick said. “She led by her example and every kid could she how hard she played each game.” Scully has signed an NCAA letter of intent to play Division I lacrosse at Iona College next year.
