Huntington Art Students Shine, Again

Huntington High School art students shined at the Huntington Art Council’s High Arts Showcase, which annually features exceptional work created by teenagers from across Long Island.

The show, which the Arts Council affectionately calls the Art-trium Gallery in reference to its location in the atrium of a huge Route 110-area office building (located at 25 Melville Park Road, just south of the Long Island Expressway), will continue daily through April 7 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is open to the public.

Each year all of the works on display are evaluated and the best receive an Award of Excellence, an honored bestowed on Huntington’s Sabina Schneider, George Mergille and Rebecca Lader.

Huntington’s Chloe Drace, Christine Kang, Lanie Treanor and Katie Levittan were also invited to exhibit their beautiful work in the prestigious show.

Ms. Sabina’s pencil drawing was called “State of Enigma” and Mr. Mergille called his graphic art piece “Urban Scape.”  Ms. Lader’s award winning photo was titled “Rag Doll.”  The three students are enrolled in classes taught by Lorraine Costello, Kasmira Mohanty and Pamela Piffard, respectively.

The show opened March 4.  A two-hour reception was held two days later for participants.  Diana Cherryholmes, HAC executive director and William Grabowski, curator of the Art-trium Gallery, greeted the crowd, which was entertained by the Huntington High School honors string quartets, directed by Lisa Leonardi.  The students included orchestra members Amanda Ho, Olivia Wyrick and Joseph D’Esposito on violin, Katherine Beavers and Christian Wilbur on viola and Matt Meszaros on cello.

“Congratulations to our talented art students and a special thanks to our talented music students for creating such a classy atmosphere for the reception,” said Joan Fretz, Huntington director of fine and performing arts.
