Blue Devil Football Opens at Home on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Huntington FootballThe Huntington varsity football team will kick-off the 2007 season at home this Saturday (Sept. 8) against Half Hollow Hills West at 1:30 p.m.  Admission is free.

The contest will mark the first Blue Devil football game at the school’s new outdoor athletic complex.  “We’re excited to play on the new field and get the season underway,” Huntington coach Steve Muller said.

The Blue Devils finished last fall with a 6-4 mark and were the Suffolk Division III runners-up.  This year’s team returns All-County running back Eric Santos, All-Division Dashaun Thomas and second team All-Division Pat Coffey.

More than 50 boys turned out for the varsity and junior varsity teams, but Muller had hoped for a bigger numbers.  “We are going to have a small team this year, but everyone is working hard and we’ll play hard,” he said.

Last fall the team hosted only one game at Huntington High School before the complex was demolished and a new synthetic turf field and running track were installed, along with new bleachers and a new scoreboard.  The Huntington homecoming was moved to Cold Spring Harbor High School and other home games were turned into road contests.

Last year’s Huntington JV team finished 1-5-1 but the J. Taylor Finley Middle School squad went 5-1.  “We lost a lot of great players to graduation but we have some young men who are ready to step up,” Muller said.  “We have a tough schedule and want to get the season started on a good note.”
