Trustees Appoint New Foreign Language Teachers
Two new foreign language teachers have been appointed by the Huntington School Board to work in the district’s schools. Trustees approved Martin Howfield’s probationary appointment and hired Joan Anderson for a part-time position.
Mr. Howfield, who was appointed as both a foreign language and ESL teacher will work at J. Taylor Finley Middle School while Ms. Anderson has been assigned to Huntington High School.
Martin Howfield graduated from St. John’s University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Spanish. He earned a Master of Science degree at St. John’s in 1986 in bilingual education. He has also studied Spanish literature and bilingual education at New York University and school administration at St. John’s, Long Island University and Queens College. He earned a law degree in February 2004 at New York Law School.
Mr. Howfield has worked in a number of New York City, Connecticut and Long Island schools over the years as a foreign language and ESL teacher, staff developer, associate principal, ESL program coordinator, assistant principal, principal, department head and attorney.
District officials reviewed 21 applications and interviewed five candidates before recommending Mr. Howfield for appointment. He will be eligible for tenure in both foreign language and ESL certification areas on September 1, 2010.
Joan Anderson earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Long Island University in 1978 and 1982, respectively. She obtained a professional diploma in 1985 at LIU in educational administration.
Prior to coming to Huntington she worked in Oceanside and at the York Preparatory School in New York City. From 1984 to 1994 she worked in the Locust Valley school district as a Spanish and French teacher and the chairperson of the Foreign Language Department for grades 7-12. She has also been employed as an adjunct professor of Spanish at Molloy College and was a part-time speech teacher in Huntington from December 2003 to June 2004.
