Planning for After School Chinese Study Program Continues
The Huntington School District is moving ahead with plans to offer a Chinese after school study program that will be funded by the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York. A similar program was offered last year.
The tentative model has classes being offered at both Huntington Intermediate School and Woodhull Intermediate School. Under this tentative plan classes will run Monday to Thursday from 3:10 to 4:10 p.m. at Huntington Intermediate and from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. at Woodhull. The program would begin on Tues. Oct. 16 and run through Thurs. May 15.
Students that participated in the program last year will be invited to register again. It will be open to fifth and sixth graders with priority given to the older youngsters. The teachers and materials for the program will be provided by the Culture Office.
Students will have to provide their own transportation home each day. The district considered having the program run twice a week for two hours each session but believed the second hour would have trouble attracting participants. “It is most convenient for parents to have the program right after school ends,” said Carmen Kasper, Huntington’s director of foreign language.
Ms. Kasper has been working with James Ching-Nan Chang, director of the Culture Center to continue the program in Huntington that began last year.
Once plans are finalized, parents will be provided with two weeks notice prior to the start of the program.
