Huntington Foundation Solicits Grant Applications from Teachers

Teachers with dreams, both big and small are being invited by the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education to submit grant applications that could make those dreams come true.

The Foundation has reached out to Huntington teachers, asking them to submit Mini-grant and Star grant applications.  The Mini-grant program “is to provide money for special projects costing up to $1,000 for innovative classroom activities that are beyond the core curriculum, such as new computer software, Leappads and various workshops,” according to the grant application form.  Mini-grant applications must be submitted by Oct. 30.

Star grants range from about $1,000 to as high as $11,000.  They are awarded for projects that “fuel grade and school wide initiatives that have a broad impact or grand vision of education,” according to the Foundation.

Last year’s Star grants included “Smart Room” technology for the J. Taylor Finley Middle School science program, mentor texts for literacy education, primary grade level workshops by visiting scientists and ELMO technology designed to bring children’s works and books to life, as well as other initiatives. The Star grant application deadline is Jan. 7, 2008.

Teachers have been asked to answer a set of questions in completing their applications including how the grant will enhance the instructional program in their classroom, how it will support the standards within the curriculum, what will students be able to accomplish as a result of the grant that will expand and enhance their learning and, for Star grants, what other funding sources have been investigated to support the project?

The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization. It will hold its 15th Annual Reach for the Stars fundraising gala on Friday, January 25, 2008 at the elegant Woodlands in Woodbury.  More information about the event will be announced soon.
