Huntington Principal Sends Homecoming Letter

Huntington High School Principal Carmela Leonardi wants Homecoming 2007 to be both memorable and safe.  So she is sending students and parents a short letter outlining some key points for the weekend.

“Events such as Homecoming make high school experiences memorable,” Dr. Leonardi wrote in her letter.  “They also strengthen social ties and foster cooperation.  We would love to see parents there.  We invite all our families to participate in this type of high school activity.”

Parents are being urged to attend a pre-Homecoming alcohol and drug prevention meeting/workshop scheduled for Tues. Sept. 18 in the school cafeteria.  “It is important to all of us that students enjoy school events and come away from them with positive experiences,” Dr. Leonardi said.

The principal sent home to parents and students a concise set of guidelines that “are intended to help all students reach the desired goal of having a good time while living up to the expectation of civil and safe behavior.  I ask that you discuss them with your son/daughter and that you support the guidelines intended to promote safety.”

The Sept. 18 meeting has been organized by high school drug and alcohol counselor Vic Matarasso and members of the counseling staff, who will present a variety of parenting techniques and strategies “that can be utilized to assist children in remaining drug and alcohol free during this event and in the future,” according to Dr. Leonardi.

The goal of the program and for the weekend is for student safety.  “Adolescents’ use of alcohol and other illegal drugs dramatically increase their risk of engaging in unsafe, unhealthy and potentially dangerous behavior,” Dr. Leonardi said.  “By working together, we can ensure that all participants enjoy the exciting events scheduled for the Homecoming weekend.”
