Huntington School Renovations Complete by Opening Day
In addition to the regular summer cleaning and repair routines, the Huntington School District’s Buildings and Grounds Department completed three major renovation projects by opening day.
The work included replacing the original metal canopy in front of J. Taylor Finley Junior High School that was more than 40 years old, renovating the office areas found along Huntington High School’s main hallway and creating movable partitions/bookcases to solve space issues at the four district primary schools.
Assistant Superintendent David H. Grackin said a new underground oil storage tank was also installed at the high school. The district is currently dealing with the issue of the exterior cafeteria wall moving away from the steel structure of the building. “This will be an ongoing issue this coming fall,” Mr. Grackin said.
Routine cleaning took place at all buildings throughout the summer, including washing down rooms and hallways, stripping floors and applying new waxes and polishes, washing desks and chairs and even dusting the ceilings in the gyms.
The district has a list of other projects awaiting approval or scheduling. Huntington has sought to stay on top of its facilities needs in an effort to keep buildings in good working order and to prevent even more extensive and expensive work in the future.
