Huntington Boys’ Soccer Opens Season with a Win
The Huntington boys’ soccer team opened the season by edging Bayport-Blue Point, 5-4 behind a pair of goals by Nick DiPaola. Matt Scott, Peter Delfino and Stevens Merilan also scored. Kyle Wasarhaley and Marcelo Guardado combined to stop six shots in goal.
The teams were knotted at three goals apiece at the half. Scott, a senior, scored the game winner with about 13 minutes remaining as the Blue Devils played tough defense the rest of the way.
Huntington finished last season with a 9-4-3 mark, good for second in league play. The performance came after league coaches had selected the Blue Devils to finish sixth out of eight teams.
The Blue Devils were knocked out of the playoffs last fall by Islip following a thrilling home game that came down to penalty kicks. Scott earned All-County honors after a superb junior season.
Huntington coach John Pagano is looking to push his team deep into post-season play this fall. With an experienced lineup filled with players who have gained a taste of winning, opposing coaches are no longer taking the Blue Devils for granted.
The Blue Devil girls’ soccer team suffered a tough opening day non-league loss to North Babylon, 1-0. The teams were scoreless until the 88th minute when a shot off a rebound eluded Huntington goalie Lori Messina, who played a brilliant game in stopping 15 shots.
