Strong Turnout for Blue Devil Girls’ Tennis has Coach Smiling
A big turnout on the first day of practice had Huntington High School girls’ tennis coach Jamie Fishlow smiling. The Blue Devils six-court complex was filled to capacity with players hitting balls under brilliant sunshine. It’s just the sort of sight that makes the veteran coach happy.
Last year’s varsity squad finished 6-6, good enough for fourth place in league play. All-League first singles player Kate Ackerman returns this fall as a junior. She mirrored the team’s record last year, going 6-6. A tenacious baseline player, Ackerman works hard to win every point.
In addition to Ackerman, returning varsity players include Erin Brown, Natalie Hartmann, Karly Kocis and Caitlin Ortiz. “We have a nice group of girls and we plan on winning and having some fun,” Fishlow said.
A strong turnout of returning junior varsity and middle school players, who have advanced to the high school, kept JV coach Rob Gilmor busy during the opening days of practice. Last year’s Blue Devil JV compiled a 6-4 mark behind players Victoria Alexander, Marissa Benedetto, Kara Grossman, Olivia Krapf, Erica Meyer, Olivia Sklyarova, Megan Smith, Molly Smith, Jessica Ulloa and Jenna Wallshein.
Fishlow expects the program to be very competitive in Suffolk League II. With a roster that includes only a couple of seniors, the coach expects Huntington to be solid for several years to come.
