Blue Devil Sports Briefs
In the opening game of the season, the Blue Devil junior varsity football team pulled off a 14-6 upset of heavily favored Half Hollow Hills West. Huntington quarterback William Coffey completed 2-of-3 passes for 24 yards and he rushed for another 11 yards and a touchdown. Running backs Calvin Bollar (11 carries for 82 yards, 1 touchdown) and Lonnie James (7 carries for 51 yards and one reception for eight yards) also performed well. Paul Aramanda caught one pass for 16 yards and split the uprights on both extra point attempts.
A young Huntington girls’ cross country team started off the season in competitive fashion. Kathryn Schmitz finished third on opening day and Olivia Torres and Tori Smith placed ninth and tenth, respectively.
Brian Cotter and Chris Glaser turned in very solid performances for the Huntington boys’ cross country team at the Regis Invitational at Van Cortland Park in The Bronx. Cotter also earned a medal in the boys’ Junior Class race. Eric Stein is in his first year as the team’s coach after taking over for Dennis Walker, who retired from teaching and coaching last June.
Huntington dynamo Kaitlyn Larkin picked up where she left off last year and helped lead the Blue Devil girls’ swim team to a 95-84 victory over Deer Park. Larkin raced to victory in the 100m breaststroke and teamed with Erica Flor, Diana Harvey and Mia Bengston to win 200IM. Larkin captured the 200-yard IM in the next meet, as Huntington easily swam past Central Islip, 87-36.
Against Eastport/South Manor, Kathryn Schmitz captured first place running at the Indian Island cross country course, covering the 5K distance in 22:32 to finish a full 50 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Schmitz is having a strong season for Huntington.
The Huntington boys’ cross country team also enjoyed solid performances from junior Brian Cotter, senior Chris Glaser and freshman Michael Garing against Eastport/South Manor. Cotter finished first and Glaser and Garing had stellar races, setting personal best records over the 5,000 meter course.
Freshman Blue Devil boys’ cross country runner Leslie Stephan turned in an eye-popping effort at the Bob Pratt Invitational at Sunken Meadow State Park. Stephan was among the top freshmen in the division.
