Merilan’s Goal is all Huntington Soccer Needs
The Huntington boys’ soccer team has had trouble scoring in the second half of the year, but all it needed was one goal in the last game of the regular season and the Blue Devils got just that as junior Stevens Merilan lifted the team over Eastport-South Manor, 1-0.
Huntington (7-4-1 league, 10-4-3 overall) looked like “world beaters” early in the season, before riding smack into turbulence, hitting a rough patch that saw the team struggle mightily to mount an offense. Head coach John Pagano hopes to put it all behind the team during the post-season tournament.
Merilan’s goal came off a pass from senior Alex Brown in the game’s 10th minute. Neither team could put the ball in the net again. Blue Devil junior goalies Marco Lagone and Marcelo Guardado combined to record five saves. The loss dropped ESM to 3-8-1 (5-9-2 overall).
Fifth seeded Huntington travels to fourth seeded Comsewogue on Thursday (Nov. 1) for a 2 p.m. Suffolk Class A quarterfinal round game. The winner will advance to play at first seeded Sayville, Monday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.
