Teachers Veturia Cranganu (AP French independent study) and Rosanne Brienza (Protection of Animal Rights Team) have been appointed Huntington High School club advisors.
Denise Fields and Elaine Gilmartin were approved to work as counselors in the district’s Safe and Drug Free Schools program. They will be paid $50 per hour to up to 128 hours of work. Their stipends will be funded by a Title IV grant.
Sharon Holly has been appointed the peer mediation program coordinator. She will be paid $25 per hour for up to 40 hours of work. The Safe & Drug Free Schools grant will cover the stipend.
This fall’s Huntington High School blood drive was successful, collecting 77 pints. Organizers offered thanks to students and staff for participating in the event.
The Blue Devil marching band turned in another stunning performance at a competition hosted by Mineola High School. Huntington scored an 84.7, which at the time was the second highest total in its division in the state this year. The effort set the state for the group’s appearance in the state championships at the Syracuse Carrier Dome.
Final numbers are now in for Huntington High School’s third annual Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk. More than $2,000 was collected. It will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The event was organized by a group of teachers and support staff, along with several students.
“The girls in the Class of 2011, with their advertising of pink hair extensions, made this the most successful walk the school has seen,” said school nurse Connie DeGrassi, who was one of five organizers. Dozens of students and staff paid for the hair extensions as a way of demonstrating their hope and solidarity.
The Huntington Step team provided entertainment for the walk’s participants. The amount raised more than doubled that realized in previous years.
Huntington School District Clerk Elizabeth Troffa and teacher aide Jackeline Galante have been added to the list of employees authorized to receive mileage reimbursement for their approved district related travel.
Huntington School Board members approved a bid for fuel delivery to John’s Fuel Oil. The company was the only bidder. It will deliver oil to the district’s schools at a price 12 cents per gallon above the Oil Price Information Service New York Harbor spot barge weekly average.
The Huntington Intermediate School newspaper club is evidently a popular activity, so popular that librarian and club advisor Patricia Dillon had to add another meeting to the weekly schedule. Since there are just 30 computers in the computer room and otherwise limited space there, two shifts of club members are necessary. Fourth grade club members now work on articles each Tuesday and fifth and sixth graders do the same on Wednesday.
Huntington school trustees have approved the disposal of seven Dell computers located at Huntington High School that are now obsolete.
