Huntington School Board members have appointed numerous intramural advisors including Stephen Henry, Michael Fabio and Peter Fusco at the high school, Travis Smith at J. Taylor Finley Middle School, Eric Triolo, Michael Marinello, Louis R. Giani and Carrie Postel at Woodhull and Huntington Intermediate schools and Eric Mininni, Nancy Conlon, Lynn Hefele and Theresa E. Matthews at the primary school level.
At the Suffolk Track Officials Invitational, Huntington’s Kathryn Schmitz finished in sixth place in a personal best time. Blue Devil girls’ cross country teammates Olivia Torres and Jillian Silverberg also posted personal records at the contest.
The Huntington varsity girls’ soccer team earned a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Eastport-South Manor on a beautiful day at Blue Devils Stadium. Maya Yakobi and Matte Scully scored in the winning effort, which saw sophomore Lori Messina make six saves in goal.
The Blue Devils fought to the end in a 2-1 loss to Comsewogue, which took a 2-0 lead with less than five minutes remaining. Messina recorded nine saves in the game.
Huntington couldn’t handle powerful Islip in a 3-1 defeat. Casey Scully scored the lone Blue Devil goal. Messina was strong in the net with 13 saves.
Greg Myers came up with three aces in the Huntington boys’ volleyball team’s 3-2 victory over Comsewogue. The meet was almost mythic in length as the Blue Devils prevailed, 25-15, 26-24, 18-25, 19-25, 25-16.
The Huntington varsity boys’ soccer team was coasting right along this fall, even breaking into the state rankings, when all of a sudden the Blue Devils hit a very rough patch of four games, losing to Rocky Point (4-3), Comsewogue (1-0) and tough Sayville (3-1) and settling for a tie against Islip (1-1).
Against Rocky Point, Huntington trailed at halftime, 2-0, before scoring three unanswered second half goals to take a 3-2 lead. But, then the Eagles responded, with the game winner coming with about six minutes remaining. Stevens Merilan, Alex Brown and Matt Scott scored for the Blue Devils.
Huntington’s offense disappeared in a scoreless effort against Comsewogue as the Blue Devils managed only four shots on goal. The game remained scoreless until the final ten minutes of play.
Huntington and Sayville fought to a 1-1 halftime tie before the Golden Flashes took control with two second half goals. Jose Vasquez scored for Huntington.
Huntington and Islip engaged in a defensive struggle during a scoreless first half.
Nick DiPaola tied the game, 1-1, when he scored during a scramble in the box in front of the net with less than six minutes remaining. Marcelo Guardado recorded seven saves in the net.
The Huntington girls’ cross country team suffered a narrow loss to Comsewogue, but Blue Devil Kathryn Schmitz won her third consecutive league race. Olivia Torres finished fourth and Tori Smith and Ricki Norton placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
Travis Tate has been approved to work as a supervisor at Huntington athletic events. He will be paid at the rate of $29.63 per hour.
