Big Second Half Propels Blue Devil JV Pigskin Team

JV Football against ComsewogueThe Huntington JV football team hunkered down and came-from-behind to topple previously undefeated Comsewogue in a well-played game, 14-6.  It was the Blue Devils’ fifth victory in six games and featured perhaps the best defensive effort of the season.

Early in the game, the Warriors marched 57 yards over eight plays for a touchdown.  “Fortunately for us, that was their last,” said Ron Wilson, who along with Tim Madden, coaches the Blue Devils.  Huntington’s Ricardo Caballero and Calvin Bollar teamed up to stop Comsewogue’s two-point conversion attempt.

Still trailing 6-0 in the third quarter, David Herring returned a Warriors kick to the 47 yard line to finally ignite the stalled Blue Devil offense.  Huntington then used five plays to drive 53 yards behind some nifty passes from quarterback Will Coffey to Paul Aramanda and Bollar and the ferocious running attack of Bollar, Herring and Lonnie James, who carried the ball into the end zone for the team’s first points.  Aramanda’s extra point gave Huntington a 7-6 lead.

Locked in a tight battle, the Blue Devil defense came up big series-after-series, forcing the Warriors to punt.  Huntington’s offense roared back to life again midway through the final quarter when a Madden called a string of plays that ultimately resulted in a 17-yard touchdown run by Bollar, followed by another Aramanda extra point.

Down 14-6, Comsewogue’s attempted late game rally was extinguished just short of the goal line by the dogged Blue Devil defense, which didn’t fall for any trick plays in the closing seconds.

The game was a tale of two halves for Huntington.  During a halftime speech, Caballero, who is team captain, reminded his teammates that all season long the second half has belonged to the Blue Devils.  That didn’t change against the Warriors.  “Our kids came out fired up,” Wilson said.  The rest is history.
