Cub Scout Project Advances at Huntington Intermediate School

The effort to erect a pair of innovatively designed cement benches near the Huntington Intermediate School playground is advancing, as several thousand dollars have already been raised to support the project.

Led by Rob Goldman, the Cub Scouts of Pack 181, Den 6 are behind the initiative.  The group includes Nick Cataldo, Garrett Filippini, Eli Goodman, Henry Irwin, Justin Loturco and Ron Merrick.  The scouts are pushing a design that somewhat resembles a kidney with the benches sitting parallel to each and with space between them to walk and otherwise maneuver.

Each unit is designed to measure 14 feet long and will be able to accommodate 8-20 seated children.  The youngsters can choose to sit facing each other or can position themselves to face away in quiet solitude or to watch activity on the other side.

The project is expected to cost $4,500 to $6,000 based on construction estimates.  The Huntington School District has approved the initiative and t a major fundraiser has already been held at Huntington Intermediate School.  The scouts initiated the project after realizing there was no place to sit on the playground.

The lack of seating makes it difficult to have extended conversations or to simply relax.  The design of the structures is meant to encourage communication between the youngsters.  The scouts hope to have the benches installed by next spring.

The scouts are looking for corporate or philanthropic sponsors.  Contributions of any amount are appreciated.  Checks payable to Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education can be dropped off at Huntington Intermediate School in an envelope marked Bench Warmer Bash or can be mailed to Mr. Goldman at 16 Glenview Place, Huntington, NY 11743.  For more information contact Mr. Goldman at (631) 424-1650.
