Huntington’s AP Scholar Ranks Grow

The number of Huntington High School students who earned the prestigious designation of AP Scholar reached 29 in the last school year, a marked increase since 2003 when the count stood at just 18.  In all, 67 students were recognized with an AP award for their outstanding performance on series of challenging exams.

To qualify as an AP Scholar a student must score a 3 or higher on three Advanced Placement exams.  This wasn’t the only good news the district received.  Huntington also had 19 AP Scholars with Honors, 19 AP Scholars with Distinction and five National AP Scholars.

“These results are impressive and a credit to the students, their parents and the faculty members who have worked with them through the years,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.  “AP courses and exams are demanding and require hard work and sacrifice.”

Students must have an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams to earn the AP Scholar with Honors designation.  Huntington’s current total of 19 such honorees was an increase of eight over the previous year and 16 more than in both 2003 and 2004, according to a tracking report compiled by Principal Carmela Leonardi.

To be recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction necessitates an average grade of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more such tests.  Huntington’s 19 students who reached this category was a level much higher than a year earlier when the school had 13 students recognized.  In 2003 only six students earned the award and in 2004 only five were honored.

Perhaps most impressive of all were the five Huntington students who garnered National AP Scholar awards.  To do so requires an average grade of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these difficult tests.  In 2003 and 2004 the school had no such honorees and in 2005 had one.  In 2006, only two students qualified.

Mr. Finello said that students this year are continuing to challenge themselves with a wide range of AP courses and teachers and the teenagers themselves are looking toward “even higher levels of achievement.”
