Huntington Logs onto School Island for Academic Improvement

The latest tool in the Huntington School District’s effort to drive academic achievement higher is a web-based review program known as School Island.  The district has purchased a license to use the site and secondary grade level teachers have already participated in a professional development session for program training.

The program covers math, science, social studies and English disciplines for students in grades 3-12.  Students will have the ability to utilize the program for their own review of key concepts in academic subjects and teachers can use it for class assignments.  The site can be accessed at www.schoolisland.com.

“The program was purchased by the humanities, math and science departments for this school year,” Science Director Kenneth Graham said.  “It allows students to review at their own pace and target areas of weakness, learn from their mistakes, and explore topics in depth.”

The program also provides teachers with an opportunity to create individualized assignments for students, receive instant feedback to monitor progress, and present information to the students utilizing available technology.

“Even if a student's teacher is not using School Island, they may still go in on their own and create personalized assignments that are specific to their course needs,” Mr. Graham said. “This is something that the teachers at the secondary level are now aware of, and we will be informing the elementary teachers very soon.”

Huntington has been making a concerted effort in all eight school buildings to improve student learning and test results.  The district hopes this new program will lead to higher performance levels.  Mr. Graham said that “secondary level teachers have access to student log-in ID numbers and students will be prompted to choose their own password.  The same will follow for grades three to six.”

Huntington School District parents are being encouraged to visit the School Island website and become familiar with the program as teachers and administrators begin utilizing.
