Blue Devil JV Football Sees Undefeated Dreams Vanish
The Huntington junior varsity football team appeared headed to its fifth consecutive win when Sayville surprised the Blue Devils with a last second touchdown, dashing the team’s hopes to go through the season undefeated as the Golden Flashes nailed down the victory, 12-7.
The game saw defensive gridlock sandwiched by offensive fireworks. Sayville scored on its first possession, driving 63 yards on 11 plays, but Huntington stopped an attempted two-point conversation when defensive end Patrick Einhorn came up with a devastating tackle.
Trailing 6-0, the Blue Devils mounted their own drive, marching 70 yards
behind running backs Calvin Bollar, Lonnie James, Paul Aramanda and David Herring, who was making his first appearance after being sidelined by an early season injury. It was Herring who tied the game when he skated 27 yards into the end zone on a toss play. Aramanda’s extra point attempt split the uprights and Huntington had itself a 7-6 lead.
A defensive struggle ensued for most of the next three quarters, as both teams were repeatedly forced to punt on fourth down and short yardage situations. With about seven minutes remaining in the game, Huntington (4-1) took over on its own 18 yard line and chewed up more than five minutes while pushing the ball to Sayville’s 42 yard line where an off-sides penalty and some missed blocks forced the Blue Devils to punt.
Aramanda’s kick was dandy, pinning the Golden Flashes on their own 15 yard line with 1:55 remaining in the game. But, the game was far from over and broken coverage in the Huntington secondary allowed Sayville (5-0) to steadily move the ball downfield.
With seven seconds left in the game, the Golden Flashes threw up a go-for-broke pass and a Sayville receiver hauled it in, falling down on the goal line for a game winning touchdown as the Blue Devils watched in stunned disbelief.
Huntington coaches Ronald Wilson and Tim Madden were upset with the loss, but used it to drive home the point to players that when a team doesn’t finish offensive drives and makes too many mistakes it loses control of its own destiny. That’s just what the Blue Devils did and with it a chance at a perfect season.
