Blue Devil Sports Briefs
Although the Huntington boys’ cross country team lost its meet against Half Hollow Hills West, four Blue Devils ran personal best times at the Sunken Meadow State Park course. Senior Chris Glaser shattered his best time ever, which he established just a week earlier and junior Brandon Berk, freshman Adam Cerini and senior Matt Meszaros also enjoyed personal best performances.
In a 6-3 victory over Smithtown East, the Huntington boys’ golf team was paced by the sharp play of Edgar Sanchez, Danny Goldstein, Joe Reilly, Jeremy Rhodes, Nick Shoen, Ryan Doyle and Brian Uvena. Junior Chris Mehring clinched the match for the Blue Devils.
The Huntington boys’ soccer team clinched a post-season berth with a 6-1 victory at Harborfields last week. Nick DiPaola and Baxter Olson each score two goals and Matt Scott and Alex Brown also found the back of the net. Chris Sandoval narrowly missed what would have been the Blue Devils’ seventh goal of the game. Huntington entered the week ranked 18th in New York State.
Kathryn Schmitz’s first place finish led the Blue Devil girls’ cross country team against Islip. Teammates Olivia Torres and Tori Smith placed ninth and tenth, respectively. Ricki Norton was able to shave a full two minutes off her previous best time this fall.
In what will probably be one of the highlights of the 2007 season, the Huntington field hockey team overpowered Walt Whitman, 4-1. Kerry Hicks and Kaari Casey each scored two goals. It was Hicks’ goal at about the 10:30 mark in the second half that proved to be the game winner. Casey put the final one in the goal with less than five minutes remaining when Nicole Palmer sent a sharp pass her way. Goalie Jessica Schulz recorded nine saves in the net.
Huntington combined its boys’ volleyball program with Harborfields this fall and the varsity team has produced five wins in its first eight matches. There were also enough athletes to create a separate junior varsity team, which has the athletic department excited about the future for the sport in the district.
