Blue Devil JV Football Shuts Down Rival Harborfields, 27-0

A hard fought 27-0 shutout of local rival Harborfields allowed the Huntington junior varsity football team to remain perfect through its first three games.  The Blue Devils continue to win with a combination of suffocating defense, a strong ground game and enough passing to keep opponents off balance.

Huntington’s defensive prowess was evident early against the Tornadoes, who were up to the challenge themselves as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first quarter.  The Blue Devils did have opportunities, including a drive to the Harborfields 16-yard line that ended on a broken toss play.

Huntington’s fortunes changed in the second frame when its offense got untracked scoring following a drive that began on its own 32 yard line.  The Blue Devils utilized good blocking and the power running game of backs Calvin Bollar and Lonnie James.

The team’s second touchdown came with less than a minute remaining in the half.   Quarterback Will Coffey found Nicholas Thompson open in the back of the end zone.  The two-point conversion from Coffey-to-Bollar was good to give the Blue Devils a 14-0 advantage and they never looked back.

The second half saw Huntington’s defense roll, forcing Harborfields repeatedly to punt or see its passes picked off by Blue Devil secondary stars Tom Grossman and Luis Lopez.

The Men in Blue scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to put the victory on ice behind Bollar and James who were relentless out of the backfield.   James enjoyed his best day of the young season with 19 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns.  Bollar (17 carries for 92 yards and two receptions for 25 yards) was equally devastating.  Freshmen running backs Qu’ran Carter and Jimmy Roselle chipped in, too.

“Our goal for the next couple of weeks is to stay healthy, do well in school and improve each time we step on the field,” said Ron Wilson, who coaches the team along with Tim Madden.
