Huntington JV Girls’ Volleyball Goes Winless
It was a tough season for the nine-member Huntington junior varsity girls’ volleyball team, which finished 0-11. A winless year is always difficult for any squad. But, this is a new team and the mere fact it exists at all is a victory of sorts.
While the Blue Devils failed win any meets, the season did provide a vehicle for three freshmen, five sophomores and one junior to gain valuable court time and experience in the sport. That should pay dividends over the next few years.
Huntington, coached by Lynn Hefele, was captained by Liz Mohr and Kristen Plante. The roster included Kiery Alfaro, Krista Castillo, Jennifer Dietz, Patricia Francois, Angy Marroquin, Kaitlin Millner and Ludmila Molina. Joshua Herring served as team manager.
Mohr, a sophomore setter, led the Blue Devils. “Liz was a very motivated and disciplined captain,” Hefele said. “She could be counted on to serve the ball in and hustle to every ball.”
The high school girls’ volleyball program is trying to attract more players in order to establish the roster depth any successful team requires. While the JV squad finished without a single win, the goal of creating opportunities for players to gain more on-court time was achieved.
“The team’s greatest accomplishment was winning the final game of the season,” Hefele said. “At the beginning of the season, only three players could serve over the net. In the final game, every player was able to serve. This team was the most improved team I have ever coached.”
Hefele will be losing many of her players to the varsity next fall. So, she will hope for a strong group of incoming athletes from the J. Taylor Finley Middle School program. As for this year’s team, “the JV girls will be remembered for their spirit,” the coach said.
