O’Brien Earns All-County Honors to Lead Blue Devil Girls’ Soccer

Talented senior Leslie O’Brien led the Huntington varsity girls’ soccer team this fall, tallying six goals and seven assists as the Blue Devil finished with an overall mark of 5-9-2 (5-5-2 league).  O’Brien garnered All-County recognition for her efforts, adding an Academic All-County award to boot.

“The girls truly enjoyed playing together,” head coach John Walsh said.  The 20-player team was captained by O’Brien, Molly Burnett, Greta Johnson and Casey Scully.  Scully, who had a team-high 14 points on eight goals and six assists, was named to the All-Conference team and Burnett (three goals) and Johnson earned All-League honors.

“Leslie carried the team,” Walsh said, calling his star player “the one constant throughout the season.”  Scully made her presence felt, too.  “Casey is an outstanding player,” the coach said.  “She created match-up problems for opponents and had a great season.”

Despite an earlier exit from the playoffs than Walsh would have preferred, the veteran coach called his players “great kids” and has a positive outlook for the 2008 campaign.  “We should be good,” he said.  “We had 11 first year players this year and will look for a go-to player.  The JV had a great year and some of those players will help us next year.

In addition to the post-season award winners the team included Michaela Acton, Angela Bosco, Sarah Ehrman, Julie Forster, Jennifer Hannan-Backert, Olivia Hayes-Hurley, Meredith McCourt, Lori Messina, Nicole Napolitano, Lauren Narine, Emilie Pugliese, Cecilia Reyes, Marissa Rosenfeld, Matte Scully, Alison Thompson and Maya Yakobi.  Christina Boshko served as team manager.
