Blue Devil Tennis Finishes 7-5 behind Ackerman and Brown
Singles players Kate Ackerman and Erin Brown earned All-League honors to lead the Huntington girls’ varsity tennis team to a 7-5 mark this fall. The two juniors held down the number one and two singles spots, requiring them to square off against the best players on opposing teams.
The 12-player Blue Devil squad was captained by seniors Katherine Thompson and Erica Meyer. “It was a good team to work with,” longtime coach Jamie Fishlow said. “They were very young, but willing to practice hard. They have the ability to improve in the league with more experience.”
Ackerman compiled a 5-8 mark and Brown finished at 7-5. Sophomore Sarah Lustberg (9-4) and Thompson (6-2) rounded out the lineup in the third and fourth singles slots, respectively.
“Kate had a good season despite playing some of the best players in the county,” Fishlow said. “Erin was very consistent and improved as the season went on,” he added about Brown. Both players are expected to be tougher than ever next year.
Lustberg made a huge contribution in only her first year on the team. “Sarah shows a lot of promise and has great enthusiasm for the game,” Fishlow said. In addition to her sharp singles play, Thompson also went 3-3 in doubles action in her first season. “She was a pleasant surprise and was a nice addition to the team,” the coach said.
Huntington managed to defeat teams it was expected to and stayed competitive with those residing at the top of the league. The season provided players with an opportunity to gain more experience, improve skills and get in better position to make a run at the league title next fall.
“We are only losing two seniors,” Fishlow said. “If the girls put time into the game during the off-season, we should do very well next year. Everyone will be a year older and stronger. I expect some of the JV girls to compete for a spot on the varsity.”
Victoria Alexander, Skyler Campbell, Kymberly Corley, Kara Grossman, Natalie Hartman and Caitlin Ortiz rounded out the 2007 team.
