Blue Devil Sports Briefs

Although the Huntington varsity boys’ soccer team was knocked from the playoffs far sooner than John Pagano had hoped they would be, the veteran Blue Devil coach still felt good about his players and program.

Pagano’s squad included 14 seniors.  The group helped the team get off to a fast start and break into the state rankings, but the Blue Devils hit a difficult stretch midway through the season and never completely recovered.  Huntington was ousted from the Suffolk Class A playoffs by Comsewogue, 3-2.

“It was a tough loss but I am very proud of our dedication and drive,” Pagano said.  “We battled injuries, but remained positive throughout.”

Huntington physical education teachers attended a conference sponsored by Huntington Hospital on MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staph Aureus) infections in schools.  The session was held at the Dolan Family Health Center on Pulaski Road in Greenlawn.

The conference was presented by Huntington Hospital’s Anne Sacks-Berg, MD, chair of the infection control committee and past president of the medical staff and Michael B. Grosso, MD, medical director and senior vice president of medical affairs.

Kathryn Schmitz finished 12th in the Suffolk Girls’ Cross Country Championships, shaving over 30 seconds off her previous best time.  She was the top member of the Blue Devil team this fall.  Teammate Olivia Torres, also ran a strong race in the county finals, said Debra Cheskes, who coaches the Huntington team.

Huntington’s junior varsity tennis team finished the season with an 8-3 record.  The 18-player squad was coached by Robert Gilmor III and featured Molly and Megan Smith, Jenna Wallshein, Frances Saravia, Alexandra Ottas, Alexandra Krapf, Olivia Johnson, Maya Horton, Kaila Harlan, Diana Frank, Emily Feldman, Amelia Eisen, Raven Eaton, Stasa Doscas, Sarah Cohn, Keri Brown, Marissa Benedetto and Kateryna Belyaeva.
