Bollar and Company Wins Again, 23-12

The Huntington junior varsity football team has made a habit of overcoming slow starts this fall and the Blue Devils did it again, by shaking off early penalties and downing Rocky Point, 23-12.  It was the sixth victory in seven games for the blue and white clad gridiron warriors.

Huntington took the opening kickoff and appeared headed on its way, but was left with poor field position after a series of penalties, which have frequently plagued the team this season.  “Our offense got off to a slow start,” said Ronald Wilson, who coaches the Blue Devils along with Tim Madden.

A first quarter Huntington punt left Rocky Point with excellent field position on the Blue Devil 34-yard line and on their first play the Eagles scored on a quarterback option.  Huntington defensive back Luis Lopez did manage to break up the attempted two-point conversion to limit the deficit to 6-0.

The Blue Devils immediately responded, driving 63 yards for a game-tying touchdown.  Calvin Bollar’s two-point conversion gave Huntington an 8-6 lead.  “Then our defense began to settle down and make great plays, forcing Rocky Point to punt and out offense began to find its stride,” Wilson said.

A quarterback sneak by Will Coffey allowed the Blue Devils to extend their lead.  Bollar picked up the pieces from a broken play caused by an errant snap and made his second two-point conversion of the day to give Huntington a 16-6 halftime advantage.

The margin got a little closer late in the third quarter when Rocky Point, facing a fourth down-and-11 play connected on a touchdown pass.  But, again, the Blue Devils struck back with a play that resulted in Lopez being wide open for his first touchdown of the season.  “He was very excited,” Wilson said.  Paul Aramanda booted the extra point through the uprights to put the finishing touches on another Huntington victory.

The game ball was awarded to game captain CJ Herrington, who was injured a day earlier.  “He showed true captainship and dedication when he sat on the team bus with the player that was to take his position, giving him instructions on what to do in certain situations,” Wilson said.  “During the game he was very vocal on the sidelines praising his teammate for doing the right thing on the field.”
