Early Lead Slips Away as Blue Devil Girls’ Soccer is Eliminated
The Huntington girls’ soccer team grabbed an early 1-0 lead but couldn’t hold off Shoreham-Wading River, which scored a pair of unanswered goals to edge the Blue Devils, 2-1 in the Suffolk Class A quarterfinals and put an end to the team’s season.
Huntington played well against the Wildcats (14-2-2), who at game time were ranked seventh in the state by the New York State Sportswriters’ Association (newyorksportswriters.org), but struggled to mount the offense needed against the powerhouse program.
Hardnosed junior Matte Scully’s goal 29 minutes into the game gave the Blue Devils high hopes they could pull off an upset of second-seeded SWR. But, it wasn’t meant to be as the Wildcats evened the score six minutes later and netted what proved to be the game winner nine minutes into second half play.
Huntington’s sophomore goal keeper Lori Messina was spectacular, stopping 13 shots. The game marked the close of what at times has been a frustrating season for the Blue Devils, who finished with a 5-9-2 mark.
The Blue Devils will have a different look next year as seniors Molly Burnett, Jennifer Hannan-Backert, Greta Johnson, Nicole Napolitano, Leslie O’Brien, Cecilia Reyes, Marissa Rosenfeld and Casey Scully are graduating.
