Jeans for a Cause Dollars Mount at Jefferson Primary
The Jefferson Primary School faculty and staff have never been known to turn a deaf ear to a cry for help. Through the years the group has been extremely generous from raising funds to donating warm jackets, hats, gloves and scarves to the less fortunate through the cold winter months.
One of the primary vehicles Jefferson uses to channel its efforts is the Jeans for a Cause program at the school. Teachers and staff donate $5 each payday for the “right” to wear jeans to work that day. The money is pooled and donated to several charities during the year. It’s that simple.
October was an especially busy month for the charitable efforts of the Jefferson family, which supported the Walk Now for Autism and the Huntington Breast Cancer Coalition. Both causes are near and dear to the hearts of many at the school, so wallets opened and jeans went on.
"The Jefferson staff is as committed to our community's needs as they are to educating our children and they take the responsibility to do their part very seriously,” Principal Margaret H. Evers said. “Jefferson takes pride in the spirit of ‘giving back’ to the community.”
Walk Now for Autism is the signature fundraising event of Autism Speaks. It is the nation’s largest walk program dedicated to autism research. Since it’s inception in May 2000, hundreds of thousands of people have raised tens of millions of dollars in support of autism research.
Jefferson made its donation to the group in conjunction with the 8th Annual Long Island Walk Now for Autism at Jones Beach State Park. Teachers and staff are hopeful that the money raised will make a difference by advancing and accelerating autism research.
Since October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jefferson wore jeans and a splash of pink in support of this cause. In addition, volunteers from the Huntington Breast Cancer Coalition brought Circle of Hope bracelets for the staff to purchase.
Circle of Hope Bracelets is a community-service organization that offers its dedicated volunteers opportunities to raise money for the fight against cancer. Volunteer activities include making and selling bracelets. Profits from these activities are donated to cancer causes, particularly cancer research, education, treatment and care. In the past four years, more than $700,000 has been raised. The bracelets serve as a bond for cancer patients, their families and friends and help provide an emotional lift. They are also used to demonstrate the solidarity of all those involved in the breast cancer fight.
When a good cause surfaces, expect the Jefferson faculty and staff to be willing to step in and lend a helping hand. All of the proceeds from the sale of the Circle of Hope bracelets and Jeans for a Cause were donated to the Huntington Breast Cancer Coalition.
