Five Blue Devil Wrestlers Ranked in Suffolk Mat Poll
The first poll of the season has five Huntington High School wrestlers ranked in the top four in their respective weight classes in Suffolk, including senior Jose Vasquez, who is first at 103 lbs.
Huntington’s Damon McQueen (2nd – 96 lbs.), Francisco Pereira (2nd – 119), Dashaun Thomas (3rd – 215) and Nigel McNeil (4th – 103) are also listed among the best in the county.
Omar Santiago isn’t ranked, but is widely thought to be knocking on the proverbial door at 125 lbs. and is seen as a legitimate contender for All-County honors later in the season.
Vasquez was the runner-up in Suffolk last year at 96 lbs. and went on to a third place finish in the state tournament en route to setting a Blue Devil single season record with 39 victories. Coaches say his eyes are firmly set on a state title this winter.
“Polls are nice, but the only ones that count are the league, county and state tournaments,” Huntington head coach Lou Giani said. “That’s what we are aiming for.”
