Blue Devil Sports Briefs

Huntington School Board members have approved Jason Caruso to serve as an assistant varsity fencing coach this winter.

In the first Blue Devil boys’ winter track meet of the season, Huntington turned in a series of strong performances.  Josh Daves was first in the long jump with a leap of 19’10 and Chris Glaser won the 55m hurdles in 8.5 seconds.  Brian Cotter (2nd – 3200m in 10:44), Jacob Gayle (2nd – 55m dash in 6.8 seconds; 3rd – long jump with 18’7), Hector Vega (3rd – 55m hurdles in 9.7 seconds), Fritz Barraeu (2nd – shot put with 40’7) also were stellar in their efforts.

The 4 x 200m relay team of Gayle, David Acton, Brian Ruggiero and Daves placed second in 1:44.  The 4 x 800m relay team of Cotter, Eric Scilagy, Glaser and Stevenson Gabriel finished fourth in 10:46.

The Huntington girls’ fencing team topped Centereach in the first meet of the season, 14-13.  The Blue Devils were propelled by seniors Kaari Casey (3-0) and Nicole Palmer (2-1) and junior Sarah Conte (2-1).  Freshman Olivia Weller scored the winning point in the meet.

The Huntington girls’ basketball team bolted to a 25-14 lead after one quarter, but then scored just 29 points in the next three quarters combined, losing to Herricks, 65-54 before a crowd of about 175 in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Casey Scully led the Blue Devils with 14.  Kerry Hicks contributed another 12.  Julie Forster (8 points), Maria Marascia (7), Caitlin Ortiz (5), Matte Scully (4) and Kate Mitchell (4) also scored.

Huntington led at halftime, 33-32, but was outscored the rest of the way 33-21.  It was the second non-league loss of the year for the Blue Devils.

In the second meet of the season, the Blue Devil boys’ winter track team sparkled again.  Quillian Respass crossed the line first in the 55m dash in a blistering 6.7 seconds.  Brian Cotter was second in the 1000m run in 2:53 and Emmaneul Dume (T-3rd – 55m dash in 7.0 seconds), Josh Daves (T-3rd – 55m dash in 7.0 seconds; 3rd – long jump with 19’0) and Jacob Gayle (4th – 300m run in 39.3 seconds; 4th – long jump with 18’6) were also impressive.

The 4 x 200m relay team of Respass, Gayle, Daves and Dume was first in a time of 1:40.  Freshmen Eric Scilagy and Matt Curley ran well in the 1000m and freshman James Okula looked strong in the 1600m run.

The squad, which boasts a roster of 32 young men, is coached by Ron Wilson and Travis Tate.  “It’s nice to be coaching these young men again,” Wilson said.  “The majority of them were on the Finley [Middle School] track team a few years ago when we went undefeated.”  Wilson coached the Falcons for a number of years until stepping into his current head coaching position upon the retirement of longtime coach Dennis Walker.
