Huntington Boys’ Soccer Finds Success
The Huntington varsity boys’ soccer program proved its success in recent years hasn’t been a fluke, as the Blue Devils were highly competitive this season and expect to remain so in coming years.
“We won 10 games (in a season) for the first time in 17 years,” head coach John Pagano said. Huntington was led by senior midfielders Matt Scott and Alex Brown and sophomore defender Chris Sandoval.
Scott and Brown were named to the All-Conference team and Nick DiPaola, Baxter Olson and Herberth Reyes were tapped as All-League. Max Cohen earned a spot of the Academic All-County squad.
“Matt and Baxter played through injury to have fine seasons,” Pagano said. “Alex anchored the midfield and Chris emerged as a top defender.” The Blue Devils finished the season with 23 players, said Pagano, who was assisted by Jason Suarez.
“Losing in the playoffs was very disappointing but with 10 wins we feel that we are headed in the right direction,” Pagano said. The Blue Devils graduate 13 players, but will return a solid core of Sandoval, Nick DiPaola, Marcelo Guardado and Stevens Merilan, among others.
Blue Devil Notes: Brown led the team with eight goals . . . Guardado was the winning goalie nine times . . . Huntington will also return varsity players Thomas Curley, Cesar Guardado, Petros Kalodukas, Marco Lagone, Carlos Ramirez and Lucas Santise to the field next fall.
