Huntington Students Earn Long Island Digital Art Honors
Five talented Huntington High School students in art teacher Kasmira Mohanty’s computer graphics program were honored by having their work chosen for inclusion in Digital Long Island: An International New Media Festival.
Huntington’s award winners included Marissa Rosenfeld, Brian Riggs, Christian Pivaral, Aaron Ramchandran and Sean Bauer. The festival featured digital paintings, computer based illustration, digitally manipulated photography, digital video art, digital collages and films. The Huntington students’ work was selected from 170 entries.
Ms. Rosenfeld and Messrs. Riggs and Pivaral gained additional recognition when their work was chosen for print and displayed in the Digital Long Island Student Exhibition, which ran from November 8-19 at the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills. Only 35 student works were selected for the exhibit.
An opening reception was held at the Art League, to honor the students and introduce them to the exhibit juror, Laurence Gartel, a renowned digital artist who was a Long Islander for many years and was instrumental in developing the festival to bring recognition to this growing field of creativity. The Huntington students had an opportunity to mingle with regional art leaders and Messrs. Riggs and Pivaral were able to meet Mr. Gartel.
“Ms. Mohanty’s computer arts program has been turning out a significant number of award winning pieces consistently, for many years,” said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington director of fine and performing arts, who attended the festival. “The Huntington program is always represented at local competitions. When viewing their work at exhibits, it is evident why our students are recognized so often. Their work reflects the high level of skill and creativity they are learning under Ms. Mohanty’s skilled direction.”
The Huntington digital arts program provides multiple levels of instruction and helps students to produce professional quality work. Along with the advanced photography and video programs, Huntington High School is a leader among Long Island high schools in the increasingly exciting and innovative world of digital arts.
