Blue Room Art Gallery Unveils New Exhibit
The Blue Room art gallery at Huntington High School has a new exhibit. “A Selection of Still Life” consists of pieces created by teacher Amy Cohen’s drawing and painting students.
Students first drew sections of an enormous classroom “still life” in pencil, using only line. The second part of the project consisted of duplicating the line drawing, then interpreting the same frame of the still life in a flat, bold, graphic approach using ink, focusing on the negative space and pattern inherit in the still life. The final step was to isolate a small section of the students’ original view of the still life and interpret it in a collage limited to metallic paper, newspaper and cut or torn black paper.
While the new exhibit will not be featured at a formal opening, students can view it during lunch periods. The Blue Room was carved out of an elevated stage area in the school’s south cafeteria. The Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education contributed development funds. The gallery, which formally opened last April, was given its name by the students themselves.
The gallery is staffed by high school student art docents. Plans are being developed to add additional gallery hours, including during evening special events at the school, providing access to community members.
Future exhibits will continue to feature work from high school art classes, art career interns and art honor society members. Art student interns help serve as gallery curators. They assist in the design of the exhibits, send out invitations and announcements, create gallery guides for visitors and organize a schedule of student docents to guide visitors through the exhibits.
