Impressive Performances Boost Blue Devil Winter Track

Strong performances helped the Huntington girls’ winter track team get the season off to an impressive start.  The Blue Devil squad is a determined and hard working group intent on being counted among Suffolk’s elite set of teams.

Senior Leslie O’Brien started the season opening action by winning the 55 meter high hurdles in 9.1 seconds.  Senior teammate Ally Nevins placed eighth in 10.4 seconds.   After a short rest break, O’Brien was back at it again, racing to a third place finish in the 55m dash.

Not to be outdone, junior Kathryn Schmitz, who is coming off a very successful cross country season, placed second in the 1000m run in 3:16.6, only .3 behind the winner of the race.  “This was the first time Kathryn ran the 1000m in competition,” Blue Devil coach Debra Cheskes said.  “By posting such a competitive time this earlier in the season, she should be battling the county’s best for the top spot.”

O’Brien and Schmitz, along with Olivia Hayes-Hurley and Michaela Acton placed third in the 4 x 400m relay.  “This foursome has great potential,” Cheskes said.  Maya Yakobi and rookie Emilie Pugliese also turned in strong performances in the season opener.

The Blue Devil team is captained by O’Brien, Schmitz, and Jenny Hannan.
